Surely, have you seen my crooked smile?
What about my pimples?
And what about my big ears?
Oh, how glad I am that you can only see my face.

Do I sing better than those Divas?

My name is Zinhle Ndyike, and I’m from the Vaal Triangle, specifically in Meyerton/Highbury-Henley on Klip. I want to take a moment to share my story in the hope that it reaches those who have ever felt overlooked, belittled, or underestimated. I understand how isolating those feelings can be, and I hope my experiences can offer some comfort and inspiration to others who might be facing similar challenges.

As a young girl, I never imagined that one day I would find myself in an LSEN school… an institution dedicated to children with special needs. I began my education in a mainstream school, but struggled in a class of 40 students. My grades slipped, and I found it difficult to concentrate. It was a challenging time, and I felt the weight of judgment from peers who did not understand my needs.

Eventually, I moved to Krugerlaan School, a special school that welcomed me with open arms. Initially, I faced criticism from children who came from mainstream schools, including some I had once sat alongside. However, I made the decision to let go of the negativity and allow God to guide me. In smaller classes of 10 to 15 students, my academic performance improved, and I began to thrive. I felt God’s presence in my life, even when I couldn’t see the full picture.

Over time, I earned six diplomas and certificates and served as a Representative Council of Learners (RCL) member for two years. I later pursued a four-year hairdressing course, earning a certificate that led to a career as a professional hairdresser. Despite being labeled by some as “abnormal” because of my learning special needs, I knew that God had a plan for me.

Today, I stand proudly as Miss Sedibeng’s First Princess, having won an International Award representing South Africa in the beauty queen category. My journey has taught me that criticism and judgment are tests meant to strengthen the warrior within us. To achieve greatness, we must rise above discouragement and surround ourselves with those who uplift and inspire us.

I have shared my experiences through an article about my life, hoping to encourage others who feel undermined. My aim is to be an example of hope and demonstrate that judgment does not define our worth… rather, it is the beginning of a new, empowering chapter in our lives.

My journey hasn’t been without challenges but because of all of my hardships, my story has become a testament to the power of perseverance and belief in oneself. Giving up whenever things get hard is not an option. Hold onto your dreams and focus on positivity. We all face all the challenges, but those challenges can build us into stronger individuals. If I could overcome my obstacles, you can too.

To anyone feeling lost or doubtful, remember that you don’t need validation from others. Seek your strength from within and from God, and you can become a future leader. Don’t let criticism deter you from greatness, let it fuel your growth towards successful testimonies.

You are a survivor, a warrior, a game changer. Together, let’s inspire and uplift those who are suffering from judgment and criticism just because they are different. Together we can become the change we want to see in the world.

Curled up on the floor,
At the corner of my room feeling sour.

Cascade of emotions and thoughts,
Nostalgia and regret taking the fore.
What should I have done differently?
For this, I have fought with my thoughts.

I’m so angry – sad and angry at love.
Damn angry because love is biased:
It happens to some,
And doesn’t for some.

Love they say is beautiful and awesome,
But to some it is like Faith in Hebrew 11:1
Substance of things hoped for…
They waited. It never comes.

Explain to me:
How some get it on a platter?
How it rains on them like confetti
Rose petals in different colors?

Looking at myself I asked:
Will I ever feel these butterflies?

The answer is YES.
Oh yes, you heard me —
YES.

Because I’m loved by God,
And He loved me first.
Regardless of my obscurity,
He found me perfect.

Yes – because though I tried 99 times,
It doesn’t mean I won’t get 100.
This is a YES to love again,
For God loved me into love.

With this understanding,
I must do some dusting
And change my perspective,

I choose to love me first,
And rightly,
So others may love me right.

As I continued on my journey after my failed relationship with Brian, I began to feel a deep sense of emptiness inside. I tried to fill it with entertainment, parties, and food, but nothing seemed to satisfy me. I felt lost and alone, like I was wandering through a dark forest without a map. I wondered why boys often rejected me. Wasn’t I beautiful enough? Wasn’t I woman enough?

As I searched for answers, something shifted inside me. I started to feel a sense of curiosity, a sense of wonder. I began to ask questions about the meaning of life, the nature of God, and why He had taken my parents away when I still needed them. Maybe if they were around, life would have been different.

I missed my dad deeply. I missed my mum too, but not as much because I hardly knew her. I lost her at the tender age of seven. Growing up as a girl without a mother, I often felt like a part of me was missing. I wondered how warm her embrace would have been if I had come back crying over my broken relationships. Would she have scolded me or wiped my tears? Had she been around, perhaps Brian wouldn’t have taken advantage of me. So many questions, yet no answers.

During that time, I started to explore different spiritual traditions, seeking guidance and answers to my questions. I moved from church to church, from denomination to denomination, even exploring Islam, Catholicism, and various Protestant groups. I was hungry for something deeper, something real. I joined the Catholic choir, then later the Baptist choir, and eventually the Pentecostal choir. It wasn’t easy, but the journey was truly worth it. I encountered obstacles and setbacks, but I persevered, driven by a determination to grow and learn. At times, I felt like drowning in a sea of uncertainty—different beliefs taught different things. But I kept going, kept seeking, and kept asking. Gradually, I started to feel a sense of peace, a connection to something greater than myself.

As I ventured deeper into my spiritual journey, I discovered the sense of purpose and meaning I had longed for. I realized that life was more than just existing or being in a relationship with a man—I was meant to thrive! I realized I wasn’t alone. So many girls like me were struggling, seeking, and trying to find their way. I also learned it’s okay to not have all the answers or to feel uncertain. Then something miraculous happened. I experienced a profound spiritual awakening that changed my life forever.

One day during my secondary school vacation, I met a handsome and talented musician named Francis. He offered to teach me how to play the guitar. The truth is, he was too handsome to resist. I thought that if I went to church with him, something good might come out of it. As we spent more time together, I shared my dream of becoming a famous musician, and he invited me to attend choir practices at his church.

I was blown away by the beauty and passion of the choir members as they sang their hearts out to God. Francis’s talent and dedication to his faith were inspiring, and I found myself drawn not just to him but to the worship music and the joy of being in God’s presence. One evening, Francis asked me to meet him at a neighboring church to learn more about guitar playing. As we talked, he shared his testimony and told me about the love of Jesus Christ. I was moved by his words, and when he asked me to confess Jesus as my Lord and Savior, I said yes. It was a moment of surrender, and I felt a weight lift off my shoulders.

As I left the church that evening, I felt a strange sensation, like I had entered a new dimension. Later, I went to a discotheque, but the music and dancing that once brought me joy now felt empty and meaningless. I saw people trying to fill the void in their lives with temporary pleasures, but I knew I had found something deeper and more fulfilling. That was the last time I ever stepped foot in a discotheque. I realized salvation wasn’t just a religious concept but a personal experience that transformed my life. I wondered if this was what it meant to be born again—to see the world with new eyes and a new heart.

From that day on, I knew I had found my purpose, and my life would never be the same. I was no longer the same person seeking love from others. I had found true love—the unconditional love of God. I am forever grateful for my encounter with Francis and the love of Jesus Christ that changed me. If you’re feeling lost, especially after a failed relationship, feeling alone or uncertain, know this: you’re not alone. Keep seeking, keep asking, and keep exploring. Involve a higher power who knows all the answers—the God of the universe.

Life Lessons from My Journey:

1. Don’t be afraid to take a leap of faith – Trying something new could lead to a
life-changing encounter.
2. The power of surrender is immense – Let go of your fears and doubts, and you’ll be
amazed at what God can do in your life.
3. True joy and peace come from within – Don’t settle for temporary pleasures that leave
you feeling empty and unfulfilled.
4. Your life has purpose and meaning – Don’t waste it on things that don’t matter.
Instead, seek your passion and pursue it wholeheartedly.

I am an 18-year-old girl from Ghana, a student at the University of Education Winneba.

Growing up as a child, I loved pageantry and modelling, but anytime I told my dad about it, he would impose certain career ideas in order to become a prominent person in the future and the importance of concentrating on my studies. He wanted me to forget modelling and pageantry. I used to feel bad about that, but I never gave up. I used to tell my friends I wanted to become a model, and they would laugh and consider it a joke.

One day, I gathered courage and told my dad I wanted to become a model, but he got angry and threatened to disown me if I ever tried it. He asked if I wanted society to laugh at him as being a model is shameful and a disgraceful profession because models show their nakedness to the whole world; he threatened that he would rather die than see his only daughter embark on the modelling journey. I cried so much that day and thought of giving up my passion for modelling.

When I got into the secondary phase, I still had a passion for modeling, though I was now admiring and loving the lifestyle of the Rev. Sisters at my school. I attended one of the best catholic girls’ schools in Ghana. With the exposure to Rev.Sisters, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to become one because being a Rev. Sister meant that I’ll have to give up my passion for modeling which I was not ready to do so. During my third year in senior high, the economics student had a fashion show in my school where they displayed several dresses at the runaway. I loved the idea and imagined myself being on the runway. That is when the passion deepened, and I told myself I would become a model no matter what. I had an issue: I’m not a tall girl, and the belief that models are of a specific height was a worry, and my passion faded.

On 24th March 2024, I met a man called Mr Versatile, CEO of the Versatile Agency. A professional model, pageant coach and a choreographer at my school, the University of Education. I was thrilled because I have heard a lot about him. It was a privilege to be in his presence. I went to him and told him I wanted to become a model and I would be very happy if he helped with my passion. He smiled and said he loved my confidence and would help me be more significant than him. He gave me all the information about his agency and asked me to come for rehearsals the following Saturday morning for rehearsals with no fee expectations; I was thrilled. I know In Ghana, when one is to join an agency, you need to pay 80%or 100% of your fees before you can start rehearsals, but with a Versatile agency, it was different. He gives you the opportunity to start training before paying for the tuition. I was happy and sad at the same time because I was going against my dad, though I am happy that my dream was finally being fulfilled.

At first, modelling was just about modelling, but I realised after a day with a Versatile agency that there was a whole lot in modelling; after one month of training with the Versatile agency, the CEO, Mr.Versatile organised a fashion show where I was given a chance to be part of it and was filled with joy. That was my first runway show, and I enjoyed it. Since then, I have walked on many shows and am still looking forward to being greater. I later joined a pageantry in my school, Face of Guss, where I emerged Miss Catwalk and Miss Personality. Mind you, my dad knew nothing about it. My daddy is still in the dark about my modeling career, though I know someday I will tell him.

I’m a student at the University of Education, Winneba, pursuing Human resources management. I take my studies seriously, as well as my modelling career, and I will encourage the youth never to let anyone stop them from reaching their full potential. I would love to emphasise that modelling isn’t about being naked, as a narrative my dad has. As a model, you command respect, and anyone can be a model. It is not entirely about your physical appearance. My height is 5’0, and I call myself the petite model. I’m a runway, commercial, photo, and fashion model.

I am Faith from the west side of Nigeria, a single mom of 3, hustling to survive with my kids. Talking about their fathers, we were never married, though we lived together. The first two have the same father, while the father of the last one is different. I am a beautician, makeup artist, and business woman. I involve myself in learning with any little opportunity I have. Therefore, I also make and sell liquid soap, other cleaning products, and skincare items. I have worked hard all my life but have had nothing to show for it. The father of my second baby was helping me before his business was demolished.

The father of my first baby is a woman beater and a rapist, for reasons I have. I have been the only one taking care of my two kids, even while I was still with him. He does little work and claims he’s tired when others are still working. We both worked as bricklayers and did lots of odd jobs together. Now, I need help with accommodation when I want to relocate back to Abuja. I made a post and someone reached out to me. We discussed, and he said I should go with my kids because, at that time, my kids were with my mom. I moved to his hometown with the hope of what he promised. He promised me education for me and my kids, but upon getting here, it was a village, and I’ve been jumping from one sickness to another, the same as my kids.

I have no strength to work like before. I wake up weak and tired every day. Note that he’s married, and we are not dating. I’m not dating anyone currently. I moved from a comfortable self-contained room and parlor to a single room where I couldn’t sleep or close my eyes. He said that I should look for a shop, but I’m no longer interested. My mind has already left this place. My kids are complaining about why I took them from their grandmother. We are not eating well, and he has his own challenges. I want to go back to my family; I feel like I’m slowly dying. I need to run a series of tests. My siblings are not well, and I should be with them rather than die in another man’s land, leaving my kids for no one.

I just need help. I was like the breadwinner of my family before all this happened. I’m not doing well at all. My second baby’s father is sick and needs help, so I can’t even ask him for help right now. Hunger has been our surname.
