As African women, we should share our stories because it gives us a voice in a society that doesn’t want to hear us. Sharing our stories will challenge stereotypes and misconceptions about African women and contribute towards the empowerment and representation of African women in various spheres of life. In addition, sharing our African stories builds connections and understanding of different cultures, backgrounds, and experiences, and we can learn from each other.

Evidently, there are several reasons why our voices are not heard. Many African women may not have equal access to education and resources as men, which can limit their ability to participate in social and political discourse. They may also face discrimination and marginalization based on their gender, race, and socio-economic status. Additionally, societal and cultural norms may discourage African women from speaking out and fully expressing themselves. Furthermore, media representations of African women are often stereotypical, which can perpetuate negative misconceptions that further silence their voices. Thus, everyone needs to be more intentional about addressing these issues. We must create a more inclusive and equitable environment for African women to share their stories and experiences. SheEvolves is a platform that intentionally addresses these issues.

There are several ways to ensure that the voices of African women are heard. Here are a few:

Amplify their voices by sharing their stories and perspectives through various platforms, such as social media, podcasts, and blogs.

Support their leadership by encouraging and supporting African women to take leadership roles in their communities and various fields.

Increase access to education by ensuring that African women have access to education and resources that will enable them to participate in social and political discourse.

Promote gender equality by working to address the systemic gender-based discrimination that African women face and promote gender equality.

Increase representation by ensuring that African women are represented in all spheres of life, including politics, media, and business.

Create safe spaces where African women can share their stories, experiences, and perspectives without fear of judgment or discrimination.

Challenge stereotypes and misconceptions about African women and educate others about their lived experiences and contributions.

Support organizations and initiatives that are working to empower and amplify the voices of African women.

2024 is here, and it brings with it new opportunities and challenges. So, as we welcome this new year, let’s consider the stories of African women. Let’s take into account her experiences, joys, cries, her intelligence and her courage!

Happy New Year from the She Evolves team!

Homosexuality remains a contentious issue in many parts of the world, including Africa. In recent years, some African countries have enacted laws that criminalize homosexuality, attracting widespread criticism from human rights organizations and the international community. In this essay, we will explore some of the reasons why some African countries criminalize homosexuality.

Religious Beliefs:

Religion plays a significant role in many African societies, and for many people, homosexuality is a violation of religious norms and values. In some African countries, religious leaders have actively campaigned against homosexuality, portraying it as a sin or a deviation from natural human behavior. This has led to the criminalization of homosexuality, with laws that are rooted in religious doctrine.

Cultural Norms:

Culture is another important factor in the criminalization of homosexuality in Africa. Many African cultures are deeply conservative and traditional, with strict gender roles and expectations. Homosexuality is often viewed as a threat to traditional gender roles and the social order. This has led to the criminalization of homosexuality in many African countries, with laws that are based on cultural norms and values.

Political Pressure:

In some cases, the criminalization of homosexuality in Africa is the result of political pressure from outside forces. Some African countries have been pressured by Western nations to adopt laws that protect the rights of LGBT people. However, many African leaders have resisted these efforts, viewing them as an attempt to impose Western values on their societies. As a result, they have enacted laws that criminalize homosexuality as a way of asserting their independence and sovereignty.

Public Health Concerns:

Some African countries have also criminalized homosexuality because they view it as a public health concern. In many cases, homosexuality is associated with the spread of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections. As a result, some African countries have enacted laws that criminalize homosexuality as a way of protecting public health.

Lack of Education:

Finally, a lack of education and understanding about homosexuality is also a contributing factor to its criminalization in Africa. Many people in African societies do not understand what homosexuality is, or view it as a Western phenomenon. This has led to a lack of acceptance and tolerance for LGBT people, and the enactment of laws that criminalize their behavior.

The criminalization of homosexuality in Africa is a complex issue, with many different factors contributing to its enactment. Religion, culture, politics, public health concerns, and a lack of education and understanding are all contributing factors. However, the criminalization of homosexuality is a violation of human rights, and it is essential that African societies promote acceptance, tolerance, and understanding of all people, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.

African black girls should take a seat at the table for a multitude of reasons. The world we live in has been shaped by the dominance of the white, male voice. It is time for us to break that cycle and create a more inclusive society that values and uplifts the voices of black girls.

Firstly, representation is crucial. African black girls deserve to see themselves represented in all fields, including politics, science, arts, and business. When they take a seat at the table, they become role models for other black girls and show them that they can achieve anything they set their minds to. It is important for young girls to see people who look like them and have achieved success in various fields. This representation can inspire and motivate them to pursue their dreams, despite any obstacles they may face.

Secondly, empowerment is another crucial reason for African black girls to take a seat at the table. Taking a seat at the table gives black girls a voice and empowers them to speak up. In many African communities, women’s voices are often silenced or ignored. By taking a seat at the table, African black girls can break this cycle and show that their voices are just as important as anyone else’s. When black girls have a seat at the table, they are more likely to speak up about the issues that affect them and their communities. This empowerment is important for building confidence and leadership skills, which can benefit them in all aspects of their lives.

Thirdly, African black girls should take a seat at the table to challenge the status quo. In many African countries, women and girls face systemic discrimination in all aspects of their lives, from education to healthcare to employment opportunities. By taking a seat at the table, African black girls can challenge these discriminatory systems and fight for change. They can advocate for policies and programs that support women’s rights and promote gender equality. This can have a ripple effect on their communities and even the broader society, creating a more just and equitable world for all.

In conclusion, African black girls should take a seat at the table for many reasons. From representation to empowerment to challenging the status quo, their voices and perspectives are needed to create a more inclusive and equitable society. It is time to break down the barriers that prevent them from taking a seat at the table and support them in their journey to leadership and success.

Going through a terrible breakup can be one of the most difficult experiences a person can endure. It can leave you feeling broken, lost, and uncertain about the future. However, with time and effort, it is possible to heal and move forward. In this essay, we will explore the different ways that healing can look like after a terrible breakup.

The first step in healing after a breakup is self-care. This can include physical activities such as exercise, healthy eating, and getting enough sleep. Mental self-care, such as practicing mindfulness and meditation, is also important for rebuilding emotional resilience. By focusing on your own well-being, you can start to rebuild your strength and confidence.

Processing emotions is also a critical part of the healing process. It is common to experience a range of emotions after a breakup, such as sadness, anger, and fear. It is important to allow yourself to feel these emotions and to process them in a healthy way, such as through journaling or talking to a trusted friend or therapist. Self-compassion is also an important part of this process, as it allows you to be kind to yourself during this difficult time.

Forgiveness is another powerful tool in the healing process. This can involve forgiving your ex-partner for any hurt they may have caused you, as well as forgiving yourself for any mistakes or regrets you may have. Forgiveness can help you let go of any negative emotions and move forward in a positive way.

Building a support system is also crucial in the healing process. Surrounding yourself with supportive friends and family can help you feel less alone and provide a source of comfort and encouragement. It is important to reach out to others and allow yourself to receive support during this difficult time.

Rediscovering yourself is another important step in the healing process. After a breakup, it can be helpful to pursue hobbies or interests that you may have neglected, or set new goals and aspirations for yourself. By focusing on your own personal growth, you can build a stronger sense of self-worth and confidence.

Finally, moving forward is the ultimate goal in the healing process. This can involve setting new relationship goals, taking risks and trying new things, and learning from the past in order to create a better future. By focusing on the present and taking steps to create a better future, you can emerge from the experience stronger and more resilient than ever before.

Healing after a terrible breakup is a difficult journey, but it is possible. By focusing on self-care, processing emotions, forgiveness, building a support system, rediscovering yourself, and moving forward, you can heal and move towards a brighter future. Remember to be patient with yourself and to take things one day at a time. With time and effort, you can emerge from this experience stronger and more resilient than ever before.

Domestic violence is a serious issue that affects millions of people around the world. It is a pattern of behaviour used by one person to gain control over another person in an intimate relationship. Domestic violence can take many forms, including physical, emotional, sexual, and financial abuse, and it can happen to anyone, regardless of age, gender, or socioeconomic status. Speaking out about domestic violence can be extremely difficult, but it is important to do so for several reasons.

Speaking out about domestic violence can help to break the cycle of abuse. Many people who experience domestic violence feel isolated and alone, and they may believe that the abuse is their fault. By speaking out, they can realise that they are not alone and that the abuse is not their fault. This can give them the courage and strength to leave the abusive relationship and seek help.

Speaking out about domestic violence can help to hold abusers accountable for their actions. Domestic violence is a crime, and abusers should be held responsible for their behaviour. By speaking out, survivors of domestic violence can help to ensure that their abusers are held accountable and that they are not able to harm others in the future.

Speaking out about domestic violence can help to raise awareness about the issue. Domestic violence is often hidden behind closed doors, and many people are unaware of the prevalence and severity of the problem. By speaking out, survivors of domestic violence can help to educate others about the issue and raise awareness about the signs of abuse. Speaking out about domestic violence can help survivors to heal and move on from the trauma of the abuse.

Domestic violence can have long-lasting effects on a person’s mental health and well-being, and it can take time to heal from the trauma. By speaking out, survivors can take control of their lives and begin the healing process.

Speaking out about domestic violence is an important step for survivors of abuse. It can help to break the cycle of abuse, hold abusers accountable, raise awareness about the issue, and promote healing and recovery. While it may be difficult to speak out, it is important to remember that help and support are available, and that speaking out can be a powerful tool in the fight against domestic violence.

Female genital mutilation (FGM) is a practice that involves the partial or complete removal of the female genitalia for non-medical reasons. It is also referred to as female genital cutting or female circumcision. FGM is typically carried out on girls between infancy and the age of 15, although it can also be performed on adult women. FGM is practiced in many parts of the world, including Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. It is often associated with cultural or religious traditions, but there is no religious justification for the practice.

There are also no medical benefits to FGM and it can cause severe physical harm, including bleeding, infections, chronic pain, and difficulties with urination and childbirth. It can also lead to significant psychological harm, such as anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). FGM can negatively impact a person’s sexual health and pleasure, leading to pain and discomfort during sex and complications during childbirth.

The practice is a violation of human rights and often performed on children who are not old enough to give informed consent. For these reasons, FGM is widely recognized as a harmful cultural practice that should be eliminated. As mentioned before, FGM is recognized as a violation of human rights and is illegal in many countries. However, the practice continues in many communities, and efforts to end it must be culturally sensitive and involve education and awareness-raising about the harmful effects of FGM. It is crucial to involve local communities, religious leaders, and healthcare providers in efforts to end the practice. These efforts must be culturally sensitive and involve education and awareness-raising about the harmful effects of FGM.

There are several things YOU AND I can do to raise awareness about FGM:

Educate yourself: Read up on the topic to understand what FGM is, why it is harmful, and where it is practiced. This will help you speak knowledgeably about the issue and answer questions others may have.

Talk to others: Start a conversation about FGM with your family, friends, and colleagues. This can help raise awareness and encourage others to take action. You can also bring up the issue with community and religious leaders to help raise awareness in those groups.

Use social media: Share information about FGM on social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Use hashtags to increase visibility and reach a wider audience.

Join a campaign or organization: Join a local or international campaign or organization working to end FGM. This can provide opportunities to volunteer, fundraise, and engage with others who are passionate about the issue.

Donate: Support organizations that work to end FGM by making a donation or fundraising for them.

Raising awareness about FGM is crucial in the effort to end the practice. By taking action and speaking out, YOU and I can help make a difference and support those affected by FGM. It is reality for many young girls in Africa and more needs to be done to protect these girls against such harmful cultural practices. Let us stand together to end this cycle of abuse in our African communities.

Africa has a history of not owning its own solutions. This is because Africa has been exploited by the international arena for decades, which meant that every economic, social and environmental challenge always had western inspired solutions. However, Africans have proved to have tailor-made solutions to their challenges using available resources and giving confidence in ownership. Malawi is common in finding or designing solutions to confront its daily challenges. Due to the multifaceted problems that the country encounters, the high cost of living, the fuel crisis, the skyrocketing unemployment rate etc., Kabaza (Bicycle) have become the most effective and efficient means of transport in the country. The streets of Malawi are a craze of Kabaza drivers going up and down looking for customers/passengers.

The encouraging part of this business is that most Kabaza owners are young adults, which has eased the burden of unemployment and reduced crime. The Kabaza is easily accessible in any part of the country and therefore functions informally like an uber as one can get a Kabaza from anywhere, even as close as getting one by the doorstep. In terms of job creation, it is a value concept. It only requires a few resources or capital. Anyone can start the trade as long as they have a bicycle. The Kabaza business is meeting a critical need in Malawi by offering the most flexible and affordable means of transport. Undoubtedly, it brings socio-economic groups out of poverty and empowers the youth to be self-reliant. Therefore, the business is an easy start-up since most homes, on average own a bicycle. In addition, it is an effective way of enhancing economic and entrepreneurial growth. The business also contributes to empowering local communities to help them survive economically, socially and physically.

The Kabaza story began in Karonga, in early 2005, a district located in the Northern Region of Malawi under a business called Cargo. This small trade became very lucrative in Karonga, attracting many unemployed youths and young adults. In no time, they became Cargo business owners with an enviable income, sustaining their families and day-to-day living costs. Subsequently, the business became overcrowded, resulting in the spread of the industry in other parts of Malawi. This overwhelmingly fast-paced spread eventually led to urbanisation, unemployment and adequate, affordable intra-city public and commercial transport. As a result, the Kabaza business became an attractive venture and captivated a few established businessmen, the likes of Mr Salumpha based in Mzuzu. He was the first to buy about 5 000 Kabaza, employing 5 000 youths at the time, which attracted the government’s attention in recognising and appreciating his job creation efforts.

This trade in a developing country has various advantages: availability and affordability. They can also easily traverse through narrow roads and rough terrain and easily navigate the most jammed roads. They quickly reach remote areas and meander through the hectic urban traffic, meeting some urban residents’ unmet transport needs. This type of transportation has quickly become popular not only in Malawi but also in other countries. Its acceptance has increased steadily and has become the primary mode of transportation in Malawi and Africa. It has become a means of transportation regularly used by people of all ages, men and women alike, mainly middle to lower-income earners.

Unfortunately, not all Malawians embrace this means of transport as it is associated with the less privileged. One pointed out and said, “the problem with Africans is that we want to jump stages of economic and industrial growth, instead of wishing to be developed in one day, it is good to start with what we have. I see uber eats in Kenya being delivered on small motorbikes, and people get food on time without worrying about traffic jams. In New York deliveries are even done on skateboards” Another said, “it is environmentally friendly as there are no carbon emissions.”

Indeed, it is time we embrace African solutions to African problems towards a united, prosperous, peaceful Africa. To build the Africa we want to see and live in, we need to unlearn certain imported principles irrelevant to our existence and embrace our authenticity and being. As Africans, we need to navigate our resources and bank on Africa’s future, having a sense of self-reliance, responsibility, pride and ownership. We need to re-brand Africa and leave the image of a permanently troubled land behind or totally erase it.

In conclusion, Malawi is a beautiful country with a vibrant populous of inventors and solutions-minded youths. If we could all embrace and support them, we could build a better Malawi and a great Africa.

Do you remember that happy lady who took her own life? You can’t get yourself to understand how, right? Well, turns out she wasn’t as happy as you thought. She had just mastered how to get everyone fooled. Truth is, she was really fighting to stay alive. Surges of sadness would overwhelm her, so she had to force herself to remember how to breathe, sometimes, it worked, but sometimes it overwhelmed her, and that’s when everything in her told her that it was better off if she wasn’t here at all. Why did she not just talk to someone? Didn’t she think about her two children? And the husband who loved her so much? Trust me, they are why she held on for as long as she did. But as she felt like what she was battling in her head was too much to handle, but at the same time, she knew of people who had ‘bigger issues’, and they were dealing just fine… it made her feel weak. And constantly talking about how she was not okay when everything in her life was going ‘fine’ seemed dramatic. She would rather people don’t have to worry about her ‘drama’ when there is so much to worry about. Also, even if she began to explain why sometimes she was struggling to just breathe, she wouldn’t have a serious enough reason, or people wouldn’t understand (the battle was in her head, remember).

Sometimes, she managed to come out during those surges of sadness. When she did, even she was certain that she was completely okay, and at that time, she would give all the positive energy she could garner. But the episodes kept coming back; unfortunately, the feeling overwhelmed her on that tragic morning. Before she could come out of it, she convinced herself that the world and everybody around her was better off without her. At that moment, she successfully took her own life. So yeah, you may have noticed that the ‘happy souls ‘ are often the ones who take their lives, and we do not understand why when they seem so happy. Depressed people won’t always lock themselves up and refuse to speak or eat, sometimes they’ll call to check on everybody else, they’ll show the most love, playing with their children and being there for their partners, then making sure to hide when they’re feeling their worst. Let me say that it really hurts seeing depression win. So when they get the courage to let you in on their mind battles, listen to them, even if you don’t understand.

Taking ones life is a serious and complex issue affecting many people worldwide. However, it’s important to understand that suicidal thoughts or feelings can be a symptom of an underlying mental health condition and that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. If you or someone you know struggles with suicidal thoughts or feelings, please seek help. You can contact a crisis helpline or speak with a mental health professional. There is no shame in seeking help and there are resources are available to support you.

It’s also important to remember that suicide is preventable and that recovery is possible with the right support and treatment. If you’re concerned about someone who may be at risk for suicide, don’t be afraid to reach out and offer support. Even a small act of kindness can make a big difference.

Like most Nigerians, I had my fingers crossed. I believed we were about to break free from the chains of kakistocracy. I thought about the child I would most likely have in 4-8 years. I was happy that my child and the future generations would not endure the same story of bad leadership or longing for a better leader.

Every five minutes, I kept saying, “Peter Obi would win.” It became my mantra. I believed that I could speak dreams into becoming a reality. So, I went out to vote and lend a hand to create a bright future for ourselves and the generations to come. But what did I get in return? What did over 20,000,000 Nigerians get in return?

In the early hours of Wednesday, March 1, 2023, INEC and their cohort forced a man on us. They gave us a president whom we never voted for. We voted for a leader, but they gave us a ruler who sees the presidential seat as a prize instead of a duty.

That day was a black Tuesday for us. The usual jubilation and celebration of a new month did not hold. How could we rejoice when we just lost our country to a man who does not care about us?

Like some Nigerians, I cried. I couldn’t stop asking myself why he won despite our efforts. I wailed, wishing it was all just a bad dream. But I woke up this morning to face the same harsh reality. It is what it is; a reality. So, I decided to shake off the cloak of depression.

My life, relationship, and business cannot continue to suffer. I have picked up my life and am ready to move on to the next level. Some might call me weak, and some might accuse me of giving up too soon, but I do not care. I will walk with my head high because I know I did my part.

So, if you are like me, sweetheart, pick up your life and move on. The post-election situation in our country is akin to spilt milk, and you know what they say about that; there’s no use crying over it. Time waits for no woman, so let’s not delay. Move on! You will be fine, I will be fine, we will be fine. Chop, chop! I’m rooting for us.
