Life gives us a lot of hard decisions to make, but few are as hard as leaving a job that no longer fits with our values, goals, and personal growth. I remember very well a time when I was at a crossroads and had to quit my job because there was nothing else I could do.

When I think about it now, it was a beautiful, wild moment of change that helped me change as a person. The path to this important choice was neither quick nor easy. Instead, it was a slow buildup of growing unhappiness and unspoken wishes for change.

My job, which used to make me feel proud and happy, had turned into a soul-draining habit. My early excitement about working at the company had slowly turned into a feeling of routine and distance. The work that used to make me happy had turned into a boring job, and it no longer gave me the creative spark that it used to. I felt like a bird stuck in a golden cage. I longed for the open sky and the endless possibilities that were beyond the walls of my cell.

Still, my mind fought a fight inside itself with fear and doubt. I couldn’t stop thinking about my money, what other people expected of me, and how they would judge me. “What would people think?” and “Am I being irresponsible?” kept going through my head, making me unable to decide what to do. But a fire of hunger kept burning inside me, pushing me to take a leap of faith and regain my sense of purpose. As the days turned into weeks, my desire to learn more about myself and grow as a person overcame my fear of the unknown. The fear of staying in the same place and not doing anything became stronger than the fear of change.

I started to find comfort in thinking about myself and figuring out my beliefs, goals, and the kind of change I wanted to make in the world. It became clear that staying in my safe zone would stop me from growing and stop me from reaching my full potential. At that moment, I realized that my job, no matter how safe it seemed, was holding me back from becoming the best version of myself. I finally got the guts to hand in my resignation. It was a very emotional moment, with a strong mix of fear, worry, and freedom. I knew I was going into unexplored land when I left behind what I knew and stepped into the unknown.

Contrary to what I thought would happen, the choice I made gave me a new sense of freedom and power. I found myself on a road of self-discovery and renewal. I did things that brought back my drive and gave me a sense of purpose. I started to live a more whole and satisfying life by doing things like helping, learning new skills, and doing artistic things. Even though the change wasn’t easy, it taught me important lessons about the power of accepting change and the strength that comes from being vulnerable. I realized that my fear of giving up kept me locked up much more than the unknown future ever could.

Leaving a job that didn’t change gave me the freedom to define success on my own terms. It taught me that happiness and fulfillment are more important than meeting other people’s standards or getting approval from the outside world. The time I spent at the job wasn’t a waste, but rather a step on my way to finding out more about myself.

In retrospect, leaving my job was the most loving and brave thing I could have done for myself. It freed me from the chains of uniformity, led me to new possibilities, and gave me a strong sense of being able to handle anything. The most important and life-changing thing I’ve done is embrace the unknown and trust in my ability to handle life’s challenges.

Today, I’m a living example of how beautiful it is to choose self-discovery over staying the same, change over safety, and following your dreams over fitting in. There were lots of problems along the way, but each one was a step toward a life with meaning and purpose. In the end, my choice to leave my job wasn’t just about leaving a place of work. It was also about reclaiming my independence, welcoming growth, and finding the courage to shape a life that fits with who I really am. It’s a lesson that sometimes the hardest decisions lead to the greatest freedom.

I was excited and ready for another day of teaching in the small African town I had come to call home before the sun came up. As I got ready for the day, I kept thinking about how I got to this school for people with less money. I had left the benefits of my city life behind because I was so determined to make a change in the lives of these kids.

As I walked through the lively town, I could hear drums and laughter off in the distance. The kids were already awake and ready to learn, with bright eyes and eager smiles. Even though the classroom was small and simple, it was full of excitement that couldn’t be stopped.

When I walked in, the kids met me with warm hugs and songs they had learned about their culture. Their excitement was contagious, and I couldn’t help but feel like I had a strong sense of purpose and duty. Many of these kids came from poor families and had to deal with the problems of being poor and having limited access to tools. But they couldn’t get enough of learning.

I always started the day with a pattern that had nothing to do with school. We started by talking with them about their dreams, hopes, and goals. We talked about how important education was and how it could change their lives. I thought that education was the key to getting these kids out of poverty and giving them the chances they earned.

It took imagination and skill to teach at this less-privileged school. There weren’t enough books, and the school didn’t have even the most basic things. We did the best we could with what we had. We used sticks to write and draw numbers and letters on the dusty ground, and three or four kids shared pencils and diaries.

Even though they had problems, these kids showed a lot of strength. They soaked up every bit of information I gave them, and their desire to learn never went away. Through stories, art, and music, we learned about the world. We praised their cultural background, and I told them to be themselves, dream big, and be proud of what makes them special.

As the days turned into months, I saw my kids change in amazing ways. They became more sure of themselves, more interested, and more aware of what they could do. Their academic growth was clear, but what really made me happy was the spark in their eyes.

My job as a teacher didn’t just happen inside the classroom. I became a guide, a friend, and someone who helped. I worked closely with the community and got parents and older people involved in the schooling process. Together, we made a strong network of support that helped these young minds grow.

Over time, the village started to feel the effects of all of our work together. More kids started going to school every day, and the community realized how important education was as a way to make things better. The town, which used to be quiet, turned into a place where people could learn and find hope.

When I think back on my time as a teacher in this school for kids with less money, I am amazed by how strong and determined these kids are. They showed me what it means to be persistent and how strong we all are to get through hard times. We showed that education can break down obstacles and change people’s lives.

Every time I walk into my classroom and see my students’ happy faces, I’m reminded of how lucky I am to be a part of their lives. I found a reason for living in this small African town that goes beyond countries and cultures. And I can’t say enough good things about the chance to make a change in the lives of these amazing kids.

If you are reading this article right now, you are probably considering applying for Pharmacy school or have already received an acceptance letter. If this is you, I assume that you are nervous, excited, or both for the road ahead. Nonetheless, Congratulations Sis! You are now a step forward to making your career dreams come true.

Now, let’s talk about some of the things I wish I knew before enrolling in Pharmacy school. I hope these few points will help prepare for your journey as a Pharmacy student. If not that, I hope it gives you a clear insight into the career choice you are about to make.

Please do not underestimate the need to do job shadowing in your local retail or hospital Pharmacy

It’s been two years since I completed my four-year degree in Pharmacy, and I still wish I had done job shadowing or volunteer work in a practical Pharmacy setting before I even applied for the course.

Not that it would have made me choose different career paths, but I think it would have at least prepared me for the uphill road ahead.

As someone from rural villages where you hardly see the reflection of your aspirations in real life, it was 10-times harder for me to understand the theoretical contexts of simple things such as cough syrup.

In retrospect, I think that prior exposure to the environment you want to work in is essential. It will not only boost your confidence and make you stand out from your peers, but it will also help you better understand where your passions lie.

Pharmacy school is not a walk in the park

Not to scare you, but Pharmacy school is not easy. Of course, I knew it would be hard, but I did not think it would be that hard. It is better to be aware of the truth and prepare for the worst than diving into the deep end of a pool and basically drowning. So be prepared to dedicate your four years to a committed relationship with Pharmacy.

In addition to the previous point, be ready to learn and memorize thousands of drug names, chemical structures, and properties to remember only five of them for an exam.

Again, this is not to scare you but to help you prepare yourself for the four years journey ahead. If you are not good at remembering difficult names, maybe Pharmacy is not really for you. Not only is it important for your exams, but for your whole career as a pharmacist because that’s what you will be dealing with every day.

The market is getting more and more saturated.

Seven years ago, when I was applying to study Pharmacy, I remember being confident about how fast I was guaranteed to find a job as soon as I graduated with my bachelor’s degree. I am not sure if this is only an issue in South Africa (comment below if it is happening in your country as well), but with each passing year, it seems like the industry is becoming oversaturated.

Although it was not an obvious thing seven years ago, I wish someone had warned me that by the time I finished my studies, it wouldn’t be as easy to find a job as I thought it would be.

EndNote

Now that you know things I wish I knew, I hope your experience will be much more transparent and manageable. If you would like to ask me more Pharmacy school-related questions, you can comment below, and I will be honoured to answer all your questions. For now, All The Best.
