I never thought I’d say this, let alone write it. But my husband of late has been the more fashionable one of us two. As most of the world (including us) has been working from home. One thing my husband has been doing consistently for over a year now is dressing up. To put it into perspective my husband is not, and never has been a very dressy guy. His usual go to uniform for the office is a pair of colored pants muted colors, with a buttoned up shirt. If he has a big meeting then he will usually throw on a suit with a plain white shirt.

Which is why I was so surprised that whilst I was slumming it in my tracksuit pants and pajamas all day. My husband would get up every morning, shower and get dressed as if he was going to the office. When I asked him why, he said it is because it helps him feel put together, but also motivate him to work. Looking back I see how this can be true. As being in your pajamas all day can sometimes push you to stay in bed. Take longer naps than usual. And generally fall into a rut. Which is pretty much what happened to me.

Which is why over the past couple of days I have been making it a point to get up, workout, shower and get dressed. Whilst I have almost always worked from home in pajamas or sweats; Nowadays I am making an effort to update my work from home wardrobe to elevated basics, more jewelry and very light make up. And I must say after only a few days I see the appeal.

Not only am I more motivated to work but also get outside. Even just to get groceries or take a short walk as we are currently under our third lockdown. So next time you feel tempted to stay in your pajamas or workout clothes all day. Try making the effort to get dressed up even just a little. My current go to includes a pair of fitted jean with a stripped jersey, some layered necklaces and earrings. Or if I am feeling extra fancy, then I like to switch it up with a satin skirt and easy to wear top. What ever your happy medium is, try it and see if it changes your productivity.

Whilst I’ve never really prescribed to the idea that love should only be expressed on one day like Valentines day. The past year and all it had in store for us all has made me rethink my position. In part because I feel like now more than ever we need a reason to celebrate, and dress up. And whilst these tips are for Valentine’s day or date night dressing. They can also be used to change up your look any other day. The idea is to get out of what ever style rut you may find yourself in, and look good for yourself and your partner. Or just for yourself, because you deserve to look and feel powerful, sexy and beautiful.

Personally I will be away from my husband this Valentine’s day due to work commitments, however I am planning a little virtual valentines day celebration of sorts. And may actually end up making a tasty meal for my sister and I who I am currently staying with.

• Go all the way out: If there is one thing I have not done is dress up lately. After living in my tracksuit pants for what feels like years now, I am ready to seriously change things up. Which is why I am grabbing one of my most striking pieces from my closet this valentines day. Have a sequin dress you only wear for special occasions? Wear it. Or that beautiful masterpiece that you have not yet worn as you await the perfect moment? Wear it. What ever it is. If could have feathers, frills and everything in between. Now is as good a time as any to put it on.
• Show off your body: I love my legs and thighs lately. Thanks to some intense working out on my end. I feel like my body and especially my legs are looking better than ever. Which is why I plan to show them off. One way to do this is by wearing a short dress or skirt. Or opt for curve and leg showing pants or jeans.
• Let your personality come through: If you were to guess my personality on my recent style choices, you might think I am a bit of a tom boy. But that could not be more further from the truth. Not only am I girly girl. But I am also a huge fan of frilly dresses, tulle, sparkle, pink and all those other somewhat cliche “girly” things. I also am a huge fan of drama. Which usually means unexpected touches, a bold lip and a sky scraping heel.
• Try some lipstick: One thing I have missed since COVID started is wearing a bold bright red lip. I realized pretty quickly that whilst I could technically still wear it under my mask. I did find it annoying when it would be smudged all over the inside of my mask. Which is why, one of my main style updates for Valentine’s day and beyond is wearing a red lip as often as possible. If you are not a fan of lipstick. Try a cute lipgloss or nude lipstick to make your lips pop.

The year may have officially started but that doesn’t mean the problems of 2020 have magically disappeared. And by problems, we mean the global pandemic that has forever changed all our lives in one way or another. And whilst some of us are back to some normalcy and as such wearing real clothes instead of tracksuit pants and pajamas all day. Some of us are still having to accept that this is the new normal. But that doesn’t mean we cannot dress up either. Below are a list of 6 versatile pieces that are keeping is inspired to look and feel good. After all, what is it they say? When we look good, we feel good. And I for one know that dressing up, even when I’m just working at home, is a quick way to make me feel good.

1. Kitten heels: Whilst regular heels may be a thing of the past for many of us. It does not mean we should give up on heels altogether. Instead, kitten heels offer the comfortable easy to wear alternative that doesn’t feel too dressy even if you are working from home, chasing around toddlers and taking zoom calls.
2. A good pair of blue slim cut jeans: We talk about denim a fair share but with good reason. Of all the pieces in all our closets, I think it is fair to say that denim is one of the most versatile. Not only can you dress it up. But it can take the wear and tear of real life.
3. Maxi dresses: Whether you live in the north or southern hemisphere. You cannot go wrong with a maxi dress. Its an easy to wear option that you can throw on in a matter of seconds and feel put together. I have an array of them in a variety of materials for different temperatures and occasions.
4. White sneakers: A good white sneaker is a lust have and goes with everything and anything. For most of us who are do not want to get completely dolled up at home, the white sneaker is the perfect alternative. Not only does it go with literally everything, but its super comfortable too.
5. A good blazer: As someone who has never really been a fan of blazers, I now see why they are so popular. Not only does a blazer help make you look more polished for zoom calls. But like sneakers it also can go with just about anything. Just throw it on when you want to feel more put together.
