As a new mom, I have been strict about the kinds of books that I read to my daughter. Whilst she is still only a baby, it is important to me for her to read books about diversity and being different. In part because she is mixed race (I am a black South African and her father is a white French man). But also because in all lightly hood she will grow up as a minority in most spaces she occupies. Which is why finding books that celebrate and teach differences is important to me. So that she understands that no one skin tone, gender, idea is more superior. Or that she should be made to feel ashamed for her own skin colour, hair texture, or anything else that may be deemed different.
