It is always wise to do research before introducing something new into your body or placing an object where it is not meant to be placed. This type of research should always be confirmed by a healthcare professional. I am not a healthcare professional. Therefore this article is purely based on research conducted through internet sources. The information I found is super interesting, and I wanted to share this information with you. Based on the research, there seems to be a recurrence of serval items that women should not insert in their vaginas. Here are a few of those recurring items:

1. Fruit and veggies

Many women try to substitute high-tech masturbation tools for fruits and veggies such as carrots or cucumbers, but this is a BAD idea. Firstly, the weird shapes and sizes of such fruits could remain stuck inside your vagina, resulting in a visit to the gynaecologist. Secondly, even the most well-washed and ‘sanitized’ fruits and veggies can contain bacteria, bugs, and pesticides which can cause serious medical problems. While certain parts of the female sexual organ can deal with a little bacteria, the vagina isn’t equipped to handle this, and you could end up with bacterial vaginosis (BV). Thirdly, should you wish to use such fruits and veggies in this regard, a condom could help protect you from bacteria, bugs and pesticides. Lastly, it is also important to note that sharp edges from certain fruits and veggies can potentially cut or damage your vaginal walls.

2. Whip cream and other sugar-based products

Whipped cream can easily get stuck and cause irritation and infection. Sugar can change the pH level of the vagina, causing bacterial yeast infections. Chocolate sauce and other sweet treats contain dyes and preservatives that can damage the sensitive skin and mucus membranes in the vagina. Essentially, it is not recommended to insert such treats into your vagina.

3. Yogurt

I was so shocked to hear that this, too, was not recommended. According to the research conducted, there is no beneficial effect of putting yoghurt directly into the vagina. These processed yoghurts can give you a yeast infection by disrupting your natural pH levels.

4. Garlic

I have always known Garlic to be an at-home remedy to cure yeast infection because of its antifungal properties. I haven’t used it myself, but I keep hearing it works wonders for yeast infections. However, according to the research conducted, using Garlic vaginally for a yeast infection is just a myth and one that could result in a painful experience. The oils in Garlic can irritate your vagina and worsen any present infections. Putting a clove of Garlic in your vagina can also expose you to bacteria present in soil, pesticides, or fertilizers.

5. Brush Handles

Even though some brush handles resemble toys meant to be used vaginally, it is important not to insert a brush handle into your vagina. Brushes are not made for this task and may have sharp edges, chemical finishes that may irritate the vagina or parts that could get stuck inside the vagina.

6. Perfume

Smelling nice down there is a common hygiene goal for most women, but perfume isn’t the way to go. Fragrances are often irritating to vaginas, resulting in inflammation, itchiness, pain, and even infections. Many perfumes also use an alcohol base, and these harsh chemicals can burn and disrupt your pH levels. If vaginal odour is a concern, a trip to your healthcare professional is recommended to check for any underlying issue.

It is normal for girls to release vaginal discharges or fluids daily. This may start to happen after your breasts start to grow or a few months before the first menstrual cycle. However, not all discharges are normal and of good cause. Sometimes, they can symbolize changes happening in your body that may be a threat to your gynecological or reproductive health.

Here are some of the examples of normal vs abnormal vaginal discharge and what they mean:

Normal Discharge

Characteristics of a normal discharge may vary depending on whether you have just gone to your periods or if you are ovulating, and can also depend on whether you are pregnant or on birth control (contraceptives/family planning).

White, no smell and not causing itching. If your discharge is white and thick without smell and not accompanied by an itch, discomfort, or burning sensation, it is a sign that it is normal. This kind of discharge usually comes right before (and sometimes after) your menstrual periods.

Clear or transparent and watery. Usually occurs after exercising and on regular days.

Clear and sticky/stretchy. Sign of possible ovulation.

Brown or bloody after menstruation – this usually happens right after your menstrual cycle and is just a final process of cleaning up what is left after your cycle.

Pinkish (also known as spotting). Most common at the beginning of pregnancy and after childbirth.

Abnormal (concerning) Discharges

It is important that as soon as you notice the following kinds of discharges, you consult with a doctor or any healthcare professional who can help or refer you to the right place for help.

Yellow. If it is yellow and cloudy with urinary incontinence, pains when urinating and pains around the pelvis, it could be a sign of Gonorrhea (an STI). Yellow with a fishy smell, itching or burning, swelling, and redness may be a sign of a bacterial infection called bacterial vaginosis (a vaginal inflammation).

Green. If it is green (and sometimes yellow) with a bad odor, it could be a common STD called Trichomoniasis. It usually comes with pain and itching when urinating.

Brown or bloody (without menstruation) – It might be a sign that you are pregnant or had a miscarriage. It can also be an indication of the possibility of cervical or endometrial cancer (especially if there is a lot of bleeding outside the menstrual periods and accompanied by pain around the pelvis).

White, Thick, and Cheesy. This is common but not normal. It is a sign of yeast infection and is usually present with swelling, itching, pains around the vaginal lips, and when having sexual intercourse. Yeast infections can be easily treated using over the counter anti-fungal medications from a pharmacy. However, if the symptoms are severe, it is advisable to consult a doctor first.

I never understood people who waxed down there. The idea of putting hot wax, or even a razor so close to your vagina just scared me. “Why do that to yourself?” I thought. Until I had my first serious boyfriend who happened to like me waxed. Although I was completely against it, I tried it. “What’s the worst that could happen?” I told myself.

So, I did what anyone who is doing something they are not sure about. I researched. There was one article in particular that was funny and very honest about the experience. On top of that it shared some tips on what to expect and what to wear (cotton panties) when you are going to get a wax. The experience was as expected, a little sore and very uncomfortable. The person who did the wax happened to be a lady I had been coming to for months for my nails. And now she was looking at my vagina, like really looking at it.

As we spoke, I realized it didn’t bother her so I relaxed a little and the rest was easy. After that experience I thought I might never go back for a wax, but, I did. This time it wasn’t for a guy but for me. Because I liked the way it felt and how I didn’t have to check my swimming costume for stray hairs. And although some people say its cleaner, I did find out from my DR that it actually isn’t. Because the hairs around your vagina help to protect it which is why it is recommended to not shave or wax all of it off.
