My name is Godfred Enyan, but I’m popularly known as King Sobada from Ghana. I have a BSc in Administration with a focus on Public Administration from the University of Ghana.

I am a young Ghanaian using music as an advocacy tool to raise awareness about gender equality and women’s empowerment in Africa, the devastating impacts of climate change, and the urgent need for action. Additionally, I advocate for disability rights to ensure equity and vast inclusivity in every area of human endeavor.

My songs have been featured on numerous local and international media platforms, including the Voice of America, DW Women, Gambia Radio and Television Stations, Capital FM Zambia, and many others.

I have won several awards, this is including the Global Citizen’s SDGs Innovation Challenge and the Africa Climate and Social Justice Awards. I have also been nominated for the Future is Female Awards by Leading Ladies of Africa and the Ghana Change Makers Awards.

I am an alumnus of the Nairobi Summer School on Climate Justice and serve as the Ghana Representative for the Africa Climate Band – a  group of musicians from different countries using music to raise awareness about climate change. Additionally, I am a member of Youth For Adaptation Finance in Africa and the Climate Justice Movement Ghana.  I have performed on various platforms both within Ghana and internationally.

“Do you see her?”
“Who?”
“Her,” she says, pointing to the window.
“I don’t see anyone or hear any voices. Are you okay?”
She is standing right there.
“There is no one there.”
“Are you freaking blind? She is right there!”

She could feel the little girl’s uneasiness with the woman having company.
The girl liked being alone with her, uninterrupted.
The woman always felt the girl’s anger when she was with someone else.

“I hear the angel wailing.”
“There is no one in this house but us. Are you sure you’re okay?”
“I keep hearing that little angel’s wails. How will she forgive me for who I am?”
“There is no one.”
“You must be both blind and deaf.”

She starts sobbing herself.
The little angel is wailing,
The thrust of pain is like a knife.
She feels the hurt from heartbreak and lies.

She wants warmth.
She has been naked in the cold for too long.
She craves acceptance and belonging from anywhere.
The shock cuts through her like a tsunami sword,
Leaving her bleeding.

I can hear that angel wailing.
She just wants to feel,
Anything, something.
Her heart is left ailing.

She wants to be part of something,
But it has already cost her so much loss.

For a piece of warmth,
She will roll in the dust to find it.
She will pick it up,

Removing any rot that is fraught within it.

For a piece of warmth,
Although her heart has been made to rust,
She will still trust.
She will find someone or something,
A hand in the rain.

There she is, in our parlor window.
Her mind is failing.
She is freezing.
“Don’t you see her?” the woman asks again.

She is the one the moon is hailing.
Her joy has been made to rot
And left to the dust.
But she knows she will rise again,
Burning hot with all the lessons from failing.

She stands up,
She carries a picture, a portrait of herself
From when she was a child,
And says,
“I am sorry that I betrayed you.
I killed you to fit in.
But you were the best thing,
That ever happened to me.

I promise, from now on,
It will be just the both of us.

As I reflect on my past, I realize my journey has been marked by moments of lust, anger, and pain. It began when I left for university after a vacation, stepping into a world filled with temptation and choices I wasn’t prepared for.

I found myself drawn to various handsome men who crossed my path. My relationship with Brian couldn’t withstand the strain of my desires, and it ended in anger and violence. It was a bitter chapter, but little did I know, it was only the beginning of a deeper struggle.

Soon after, I became captivated by a classmate, Collin, who reminded me of Ken, my childhood crush. Our secret relationship seemed exciting at first, but it quickly spiraled into something I wasn’t ready for. Despite agreeing to use protection, I found myself pregnant. Fearful of the consequences and desperate for a way out, I chose abortion.

The decision left me hollow, filled with guilt, shame, and trauma. I couldn’t escape the haunting thought: I am a murderer. Collin, instead of offering support, viewed the abortion as merely a solution to his problem. His indifference shattered me further. It became clear that we had both failed to value the life that had been growing inside me.

The aftermath was devastating. Collin started dating my roommate, leaving me with a broken heart and a world of pain. Depression, stress, and trauma consumed me. Yet, even in my darkest moments, I knew I had to heal and move forward.

Looking back, I see that while the experience was painful, it taught me invaluable lessons. Though the journey was harrowing, it has been one of healing, growth, and transformation. The choices I made led me to confront harsh realities about myself and life. Here are the lessons I’ve learned that I hope will resonate with you:

1. Don’t Let Desire Control You
I thought I was in control, but in truth, my lust controlled me. My longing wasn’t just for a man’s embrace; it was an attempt to fill the emptiness caused by rejection and insecurity. I’ve learned to look inward and confront the root causes of such desires. Self-awareness is the first step to regaining control.

2. Violence is Never the Answer
Brian’s anger and violence were a wake-up call. Instead of supporting me through my struggles, he punished me for what I couldn’t fully control. Surround yourself with people who uplift and support you, especially during your weakest moments. Stay away from relationships that perpetuate harm.

3. Take Responsibility for Your Actions
It’s easy to blame others for our mistakes, but growth comes when we own up to our decisions. I blamed Collin for not caring about our unborn child, but I, too, was responsible for how things turned out. This was a hard truth to accept, but it became a cornerstone of my personal growth.

4. Don’t Settle for Someone Who Doesn’t Value You
Collin’s lack of empathy showed he wasn’t the right person for me. Genuine love is evident when someone stands by you in your toughest times. If a person cannot offer kindness and understanding, they are not worth your time or heart.

5. Healing Takes Time
Healing is a process, not an event. It took time to confront the haunting memory of that day—the day I let go of life in a moment of fear and despair. It’s a memory I wouldn’t wish on anyone. Yet, here I stand today, whole and healed. To those who’ve walked a similar path, I sympathize deeply. Forgive yourself, be patient, and don’t hesitate to seek help when you need it.

6. You Have the Power to Choose Your Path
I once felt like a victim of my circumstances, but I’ve learned that I have the power to chart my course. Regret doesn’t have to define you. You can turn your pain into purpose. I’ve chosen to share my story, hoping it will inspire and transform lives. Life is indeed a master, teaching its greatest lessons in the University of Pain. Your past doesn’t determine your future. Use it as a stepping stone to create a better tomorrow—for yourself and others.

Remember, your journey is unique, and so are the lessons you’ll learn along the way. Don’t shy
away from sharing your story. You never know how many lives you might touch and transform.

To all the times I took her for granted!!!

Growing up, I had always felt a little out of place, a little offbeat compared to the polished lives I saw around me. Other girls had lives that seemed to run on straight paths, like highways with clear exits, well-marked signs, and promises of destinations. Mine felt like a winding dirt road full of twists, lined with wildflowers that Mama said were weeds. “Don’t let them fool you,” she would say, pulling me close, “they’re tougher than they look, and sometimes the prettiest things don’t come from the easiest places.”

I never understood why Mama tried so hard. I thought she was holding herself to impossible standards. And maybe, on some level, she was. But looking back now, I realize she was teaching me the strength of survival and the beauty of resilience, even if it meant sacrificing herself in ways I never quite understood.

As a young girl, I didn’t see the sacrifices she made. I saw her hands; they were always busy and moving. I saw the sleepless nights, the tear-stained cheeks she tried to hide behind her gentle smile, the way she’d clean up the broken pieces of every little disaster I’d cause. To me, Mama was invincible. She was fierce, unbreakable—a warrior in her quiet way. But now, after a life-changing event, I’m beginning to understand how much of that strength came at a price.

It took a heart attack to bring me to this point, to see life as the fragile, fleeting thing it truly is. When the doctor said “heart attack,” I laughed like it was an involuntary response to the absurdity of it. I didn’t feel strong, and I didn’t feel brave. All I felt was a gnawing fear. I thought of Mama, of how she might look at me with those eyes that always saw too much, that knew the weight of suffering but carried it with a dignity I never managed to imitate. And for the first time, I truly wondered what she would say if she knew just how much of her I had taken for granted.

I don’t know if I’ll ever fully forgive myself for the mistakes and pain I’ve caused. But I know I can keep trying and honour Mama’s memory by living a life that reflects her values, strength, and compassion. I can strive to be the person she believed I could be, even if I fall short. Ultimately, I realize that Mama’s love was her greatest gift to me. It was her legacy, her unspoken promise that I was worth fighting for, even when I couldn’t see it myself.

She tried, in every way she knew how, to show me what it meant to be strong, resilient, and whole. And though I may have taken her for granted and failed her in ways I’ll never fully understand, I know I can carry her lessons forward and live a life honouring her spirit. I will keep going for Mama, myself, and all the people I have yet to love. I will fight the battles worth fighting, let go of the ones that aren’t, and strive to live a life that reflects the lessons she taught me.

Mama tried, and now, so will I.

An African woman is a resilient being. Merriam’s English language dictionary expression for the word “Resilient” says it correctly. #she is able

Come hail or high water; an African woman can spring back into shape after bending. After mistakes. After bad heartache. After a life transition from almost dead to life. Some call it stubborn. Others say, “She’s de lu-lu.” meaning she’s delusional.

But I say she’s strong. She may not have too many hand pats on the shoulder. Or words of encouragement. Or maybe everyone that surrounds her pulse is negative to her energy.

I say you keep the faith, darling. Faith from God. Believing you are not where you want to be. But not where you used to be.

Africans are associated with religion as extremist. “Show me your most prized possession. And I’ll tell you. The most prized treasure is peace of mind.

You shine—African woman.
Perhaps you don’t know,
Who notices a torchlight on in the powerful light of a bright city? Or, say, in broad daylight, who sees the use of bulb light on? It becomes excess.

I dare you to stay where you belong, in time and year like this – and see how you’ll flourish. Be good.   Think wisely.    Smell good.    Look sharp all the time, but prioritize comfort. Loser, don’t cry.
Let your tears warm up those cheeks. Be it of joy. Or sadness. But don’t stay on the problem. Move on.

An African woman should be able to start her day believing in something.  Lucks. And charms. The real deal is the triune who rules the universe. He is all you will ever need in the ticks of heat.

Who is an African woman? She is more of all this. Most of all, she is a Proudly African woman who fears no bounds.
