Have you ever watched youtube videos of women of all ages applying stages and stages of makeup and throwing around terms that got you both lost and confused but also amazed? I know I have. Of all the stages of make up, the two I have always been intrigued by are the contouring and baking stages. As someone with a very minimal approach to makeup and pretty good skin. The idea of applying layers upon layers of makeup never really intrigued me. That is of course I started to see the benefits. Whilst make up is not an essential by any means. Having some on, can help enhance your face and make you feel confident. Like a good pair of jeans or well kept hair, I see makeup as something that adds to my beauty instead of take away from it.

With that said what does baking and contouring actually mean and do you actually need them? Whilst this is in no ways a recommandation to apply these steps, it is my recommendations and thoughts on the two. To start with contouring is a make up step applied to give shape and definition to your face. Want higher cheekbones? Done. Want a more sculpted jawline? Done. What ever you want enhanced contouring can do. At least when it comes to the structure of your face. Personally I like to use it to enhance my cheekbones and jaw line. This is done by applying.a dark shade of creamy product on your jawline and under your cheek bones, to give the illusion of shadows.

The next step I like to do (which usually happens after applying my concealer and contour) is baking. Baking is a step in which you apply powder to areas of your face you would like to brighten. The powder is either a yellowish or light color. And is left on for a few minutes to “bake” and also set the product you have on. I like to use this under my eyes where I have applied concealer. And again around my cheek bones. Then once more around the middle of my browns. I then do my brows then with a big make up brush dust off the product as much as I can.

This leaves my under eyes looking brighter, but also helps the product set and last longer.Is baking and contouring something you ladies would or have tried before? And what other make up steps are you into?

I never thought I’d say this, let alone write it. But my husband of late has been the more fashionable one of us two. As most of the world (including us) has been working from home. One thing my husband has been doing consistently for over a year now is dressing up. To put it into perspective my husband is not, and never has been a very dressy guy. His usual go to uniform for the office is a pair of colored pants muted colors, with a buttoned up shirt. If he has a big meeting then he will usually throw on a suit with a plain white shirt.

Which is why I was so surprised that whilst I was slumming it in my tracksuit pants and pajamas all day. My husband would get up every morning, shower and get dressed as if he was going to the office. When I asked him why, he said it is because it helps him feel put together, but also motivate him to work. Looking back I see how this can be true. As being in your pajamas all day can sometimes push you to stay in bed. Take longer naps than usual. And generally fall into a rut. Which is pretty much what happened to me.

Which is why over the past couple of days I have been making it a point to get up, workout, shower and get dressed. Whilst I have almost always worked from home in pajamas or sweats; Nowadays I am making an effort to update my work from home wardrobe to elevated basics, more jewelry and very light make up. And I must say after only a few days I see the appeal.

Not only am I more motivated to work but also get outside. Even just to get groceries or take a short walk as we are currently under our third lockdown. So next time you feel tempted to stay in your pajamas or workout clothes all day. Try making the effort to get dressed up even just a little. My current go to includes a pair of fitted jean with a stripped jersey, some layered necklaces and earrings. Or if I am feeling extra fancy, then I like to switch it up with a satin skirt and easy to wear top. What ever your happy medium is, try it and see if it changes your productivity.

Whilst the new year can be a good time to refresh old habits and find better ways of doing things. It also a great time to take the lessons learnt from the previous year into the new year. With the skincare world changing daily, it can be hard to decide what routines and rituals are worth keeping, and which need a refresh. Here are some skincare lessons we learnt in 2020 that we are taking with us into the new year.

Whilst it has not landed in most African countries, Fenty Beauty, is the much-anticipated beauty line released by Rihanna thats taking the beauty world by storm. The line, which took two years to development has amazing results. With a strong complexion-focus, Rihanna and her team set out to create makeup for all. During the launch the pop star decided to launch without any palettes, eyeliner, mascara or lipstick.

Instead the collection hones in on a three-step beauty routine, which is apparently not too different from her own. It begins with a soft matte base soft-focus primer, shimmer and a liquid foundation in an incredible 40 shades. Rihanna noted; “The biggest challenge was making sure that each product covered all skin tones, and it was a challenge I was up for,” she told BAZAAR.com. “I didn’t care how long it took, I was going to make sure that we covered most skin tones.  Diversity and inclusivity are important to the brand. I hope that fans, makeup lovers, and makeup artists feel that.”

Whilst there have been many reviews, most have been in favor of Rihannas beauty line and its diversity. With reviews describing Fenty Beauty’s Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Long Wear foundation as medium coverage that within minutes of application will not move.

The second step of the routine is a shimmer. The star launched six wet-or-dry powder highlighters, four duos and two singles. The duos have one subtle shimmery shade and one more intense shade.  With the shade Trophy Wife being the most popular due to its freshly ground gold chunks look. It’s by far the most glittery golden highlighter we’ve swiped on in the flesh. Which is ideal for darker skin tones.

If you’re pale to ghostly—like me—then you’ll love Metal Moon. An iridescent pearly-white shade that makes skin look lit-from-within.” says Jenna Rosentein, the Senior Beauty Editor for internationally renowned magazine Harper’s Bazaar.

The third step in the initial launch included two shine-busting options. First off is the  translucent powder which promises to keep shine at bay. Whilst the second option being blotting sheets that come in flawless packaging for the less makeup savvy.

The diversity that this brand offers and the effort that has gone into the products is phenomenal. The packaging is spectacular. This brand is as beautiful the girls who wear it.

Did you know that your makeup has an expiry date? I know I didn’t. But it does, and generally we have no idea how long our make up should last. And as any makeup lover will attest sometimes we tend to keep it till there’s nothing left or its dried up.  However, keeping and using your makeup past its expiry date can cause a lot of problems for your skin. Which is why I compiled a list of products and how long they tend to last. After all, what good is makeup if it is going to do you more harm than good?

1. Mascara: Three months
2. Liquid liner: Three months
3. Pencil eyeliner: Three years
4. Lip gloss: One and a half to two years
5. Foundation: One year
   6.Powder: One year

Other tips :
– If a product is beginning to develop an odor, it’s time for it to go.
– Nail polishes are no longer good when they begin to separate.
– Makeup sponges can be cleaned after a week of use, but throw them after two to six months depending on how often you use them.
– Makeup brushes should be cleaned once a week.
– Store lipstick in the refrigerator to keep it fresh even after the expiration date.
– Do not “pump” your mascara wand in and out of the tube in order to collect more product. All you’re doing is forcing air in, causing the product to break down quicker.
– Pencil eyeliners and lip liners last longer when sharpened regularly.
– If you have a problem with remembering exactly how old a product is, use a thin permanent marker to write the date that you opened it on the bottom of it.
