Communication is simply the act of transferring information from one place to another; at least this is the definition we all learnt in school. In our relationships we need to transfer information by having conversations. Conversations that will not harm our relationships but rather help them grow. There are times that we say things that we do not really mean because we are hurting. So how do we have difficult conversations without harming our relationships?
Truth is, to have a good relationship you need to be communicating well with your partner or whoever you are in a relationship with. Here are several tips to keep in mind when communicating in your relationships;
- Start by showing whomever you are communicating with that you are listening to what they are saying. This can be achieved by looking them in their eyes when they are talking and not watching TV or looking at your phone. Instead, pay full attention and listen to what they say not what you interpret from what they say.
- Respond when they are speaking. Sometimes a simple “Okay” when someone is talking makes a big difference. It’s an assurance that you are listening and not day dreaming.
- If you are angry it is important to cool off first to ensure that you don’t shout at each other and end up harming your relationship further. One of the biggest mistakes we make is that we try and speak when we are both angry. Fact is neither of you are listening and you end up saying things that you regret.
- Lastly, try and keep in mind that whom ever you are speaking to cannot read minds. Meaning that if you do not communicate about what you are thinking they will not know.
