There was a time when someone else’s success felt like a punch in the gut. Every achievement, every win of theirs felt like a challenge to my own worth. Jealousy and envy were unwelcome guests, clouding my mind and heart with their toxic presence.

I’d be lying if I said it was easy to watch others shine while I felt stuck in the shadows of my own insecurities. It felt like a competition that I was constantly losing, a race where everyone else seemed to sprint ahead while I struggled to catch up. But somewhere along this journey, I realized that this envy was eating away at my own potential for growth. It was hindering me from celebrating others and, more importantly, from focusing on my own path.

I made a choice, a deliberate, intentional decision to stop looking at others as competitors and instead view them as inspirations. Their success wasn’t a threat; it was a beacon guiding me towards what I could achieve if I channeled that envy into motivation.

It took lots of effort. I started focusing on myself, my goals, my aspirations. I poured my energy into self-improvement, into becoming the best version of myself, not in comparison to others but for my own satisfaction and growth.

Slowly, the envy faded. I found joy in celebrating others’ victories, realizing that their success didn’t diminish my worth or potential. Their achievements became sources of inspiration rather than triggers for jealousy.

Working on myself became a journey of self-discovery, a path paved with determination and self-love. It wasn’t about competing with anyone else anymore; it was about surpassing my own limitations, about becoming the person I envisioned.

I am not free from moments of comparison or envy, but I do have better perspective. I’ve learned that the only competition worth engaging in is the one with the person I was yesterday. And by focusing on that, I’ve discovered a sense of fulfilment and contentment that comparison could never offer.
