My name is Prisca, a young, dark African girl. I grew up in the southeastern part of Nigeria, West Africa. This is the story of how I moved from a fearful little girl trying to survive the societal impacts of her community to a confident young lady who is now thriving to impact the world with her stories.

I wish not to hide anything I have experienced so far while growing up because it is time the world heard my story, especially young growing girls. Growing up, I saw numerous things going on around me. Every day, as I walked on the road, I never reached my destination without two or more men calling and stopping me. I usually stopped to answer them because, here in Africa, children are expected to respect their elders. Even when the elders have proven that they don’t deserve respect, children have no option but to do according to societal norms.

These men were much older than me, yet they kept asking me for friendship. I never resisted their requests until each of them tried to lure me into an illicit and immoral relationship with them. Of course, I refused them. I didn’t tell my mom or my family about this. The same thing occurred several times, to the extent that some senior boys in my school tried to rape me. I had refused all of their ungodly and unjust requests, so they opted for rape. Thank God, one of them who was close to me reported this to the school authority, stopping them from doing their evil deeds. Aside from everything, only one thing kept my dream of becoming a better young lady alive daily: my book and my pen. Yes, I was an avid reader of books. I read so much until I developed a passion for writing. I was exposed to reading at a very young age and began writing.

The fact that I was able to survive the daylight teenage pregnancy saga going on in my community was because I have read so many times in a book that unwanted teenage pregnancy is a terrible thing. I came to find out that a girl’s life can end by abortion in the process of removing the unwanted baby. I couldn’t find ways to spread this news to my fellow girls because some were falling victim to this problem. Every day, I would pick up my paper to write; I felt so heavy because I couldn’t help young girls like me, even though I wrote everything down on paper. I finished secondary school, and two classmates got pregnant during the exam period. My family got me a phone not long after I graduated. One day, I was scrolling down the streets of social media when I bumped into something. It was a writing coach advertising her class.

According to her, she wanted to teach people how to use their writing skills to change the world and earn money while sharing their stories. Without wasting time, I paid for the class. There and then, my writing career began. From being a girl who writes in her closet, I transformed into a girl who uses her writing and storytelling skills to re-brand her society. Consistently posting social media content, I created a brand, sharing my life experiences with people who would benefit from it. Today, I am happy with the girl I have become. From trying to survive in a society that doesn’t understand the negative impacts of social vices on children, I am now winning and thriving with my pen, trying my best to impact the world.
