Letters to Stony
Title: Safe Haven
I had finally gathered the courage to open my heavy eyelids; my eyes were puffy and swollen from all the crying I have been doing in an attempt to get over what we were once.
I sat up on the bed in my lace underwear and that baggy t-shirt you bought me on our first date, you said it should be a reminder that you are always there, never far, just close so I can lean on you when my world crumbles yet again. I reached for my pack of cigarettes.
I slowly took one from the box, then put the box on my lap and reached for the lighter u bought me on our first anniversary under my tear-stained pillow, I light it up the first three puffs, I coughed so bad I wanted to stop, but I looked at the brand of the Cigarettes, it was your favourite, the room started filling with smoke, a familiar scent that made me feel like I was close to you, I could almost hear your loud laughter, such a soft spoken angel, always carefree.
I remember you would casually say, “ baby stop looking at me like that and we should really stop smoking, one day we gonna die because of that, and I would just laugh it off and jump into your arms cause you were my safe space, I tossed the pack away and lazily got off the bed and frantically started searching for the letters you wrote me each time hospitalised, every word remained imprinted in my heart, you said your goodbyes on every letter.
I was just too blinded by the love you gave me, I suppose that’s why, even after you left, my heart yearned to hope for the chance to meet you again. But even so, the story would remain the same, because I loved you in your presence, and I still love you in your absence. I’m writing this letter because I am patiently waiting for this pack of cigarettes to light me up in flames, just as it did for you, so that we can continue our journey on the other side, just like old times.
