For most of us curly haired girls, knowing what to do with our hair can sometimes feel like some kind of social experiment. Which is why we thought we’d share some basic hair care tips for curly haired girls. These can be used whether you have super kinky hair, or just a light curl. Remember though that whilst our hair may look the same or similar. Sometimes your hair wont agree with a certain process in which case you can switch it out. After all, hair care is a bit like skin care and there is no one size fits all. Furthermore our hair care needs change all the time based on a wide variety of reasons. From pregnancy, to winter cold, summer heat and everything in between. So make sure to take the time to check in with your hair to see what it needs.

  1. Moisture, moisture, moisture. For most curly haired girls, moisture is your friend. Which is why finding a non greasy moisturizing lotion or butter is important.
  2. Learn the art of co-washing: This is one I know I learnt later on in life but it’s one worth knowing. Instead of always washing your hair with shampoo and conditioner. Wash your hair once a week or a couple of days a week (depending on your needs) with conditioner only. This is because unlike shampoo which can strip the hair of its natural oils. Conditioner helps to nourish the hair.
  3. Whilst we are on the topic of conditioner, make it a point to detangle your hair with conditioner in it. This will ensure less breakage.
  4. Aim to only wash your hair once every two weeks or once a week to reduce breakage and loss of moisture.
  5. Try to avoid heat styling and dying your hair often as possible as this can damage your hair.
  6. If you wear wigs or weaves, first have your hair put into a protective hairstyle. Protective hair styles help protect your hair from the elements and breakage. These range from bantu knots that you can do yourself to cornrows.
  7. Wear a silk cap to sleep. This is a great tip again if your hair tends to fall on the drier side. This is usually because most bedding is made from cotton or some cotton derivative which sucks moisture from your hair. The friction from turning your head on a cotton pillow case can also cause breakage and loss of moisture. So investing in a silk or satin sleep cap or pillow case is a must.

What are some of your hair care tips for kinky or curly hair?
