Growing up in a rural small village here in Africa, I knew what it meant to struggle. My father had passed away when I was just nine months old, leaving my mother to care for our family of seven alone. Four boys and three girls, including my disabled brother, who required extra care and attention. My mother, without a job, was left to bear the weight of our family’s survival.

I remember walking seven kilometers to and from school every day, rain or shine. Often, I had no shoes, proper clothes, lunch boxes, or money. It was a sad, depressing life. But amidst the poverty and hardship, I held onto a dream—a dream to escape the village, to be successful, and to help my family.

As I grew older, the absence of my father weighed heavily on me. I would wonder what it would be like to have a father, to have someone to look up to, to guide me, and to provide for me. But my mother, despite her own struggles, was my rock. She worked tirelessly to provide for us, and her love and determination inspired me to keep pushing forward.

Even in the face of insurmountable challenges, I found solace in my education. I worked hard, determined to make a better life for myself and my family. And as I grew older, my dream began to take shape. I started to see that I had the power to create the life I wanted, to break free from the cycle of poverty, and to make a difference in the world.

Today, I am proud to say that I have achieved my dream. I have become a successful healthcare professional and director of an NGO that helps black women and girls from different poor backgrounds find meaning and inspiration within their own lives and communities. In my 28 years of life experiences, I have learned that success is not just about achieving wealth or status; it’s about staying true to yourself, honoring your roots, and using your experiences to make a positive impact on the world.

I hope that my story can inspire others who may be facing similar challenges. Remember that no matter where you come from or what obstacles you may face, you have the power to create the life you want. Don’t give up on your dreams, and never lose sight of where you come from.
